The carnation gets lots of love when it comes to affordable blooms to brighten the home. They come in nearly every color of the rainbow, and can be reformed to look less carnation-y if that's your liking. But there is a blossom who whispers, "...there's nothing cheaper than me".

Alright, so your used to seeing it as filler for two dozen roses, or maybe you toss it out when breaking up larger arrangements. But see how gorgeous Gypsophila (if your nasty) is all on its own? It's simplicity lends itself to any vessel. (Love the coffee can, and I'm now on the hunt for a mini suitcase haha!) And it's sturdiness can handle even the blackest thumb.

And because I'm a cheese ball like that, I might even consider a chalkboard vase to put them in in honor of their botanical name which means "lover of chalk".

I love this time of the year. Beginning on Thanksgiving, a day filled with reminders of what we are most grateful for, and ending on New Years Day with projections and promises of the future. As this year ends, I am reminded of the beautiful faces, and places that have touched me. The people who have made me better over the years, and the ones I hope will continue to be apart of this lovely adventure called life. I give thanks and holiday cheer to you dear reader. May this season be Merry and Bright!

All white table decorations are spooky and effortless. I love that I can use dishes and candles I already have. The cinderella pumpkins I spotted at Trader Joe's would be perfection.

Because it's way too late to think about costumes I would make these with the guests, and have fun taking pictures of the silliness.

I'm a huge blog reader, and love when they clue me in to new products or sites that I'd never heard of. Jeanine Hayes over at AphroChic, who I love for her incredible eye for interiors and textiles, introduced me to the wonderful online magazine Adore Home.

It's the mags 1st birthday and the focus of the current issue is New York-- covering Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Hamptons. The aesthetic is what I call Graphic Girlie, and it's really speaking to me in my current place in life. Check it out. It's definitely on my list of monthly reads. I can't wait for the next year, and the issues to come.

I am a huge fan of print magazines. Even with the interactive features of the Ipad versions I still love to get a magazine in the mail, curl up with a glass of wine-- without worry that I will spill on my "device"-- and read. I love to smell the perfume inserts, and fight with the subscription cards as they litter the floor. I love flipping pages, real pages. And truth be told, once I'm finished reading it from front to back, I relish reading it again from the last page to the front cover. But I must confess I have a bone to pick.

In a time when subscriptions are waning it bugs me to receive my issue long after it's appeared on the newsstand. This may be a problem only here in NYC, but it is sooo annoying to walk by magazines on my morning commute that have yet to make it to my mailbox. It is a daily abuse in those early weeks of the month when the mags first hit the market. Wanting to crack open the pages of my favorite reads, but forcing myself to wait until it finally comes home.

I want to continue to support print media. I will continue to support print media. But give me the customer a little in return for my undying patronage. There are some of you (I'm looking at you Elle) who offer me gorgeous front covers that I alone as your exclusive mate get to enjoy , but you my love are a rare breed. While the covers of other mags may be different from newsstand to subscription the difference is rarely enough to encourage a higher artistry, or push the envelop of our creative intelligence.

I will wait if you are giving me something more, something edgier, than what I can purchase at retail. Of the countless takes that end up on the cutting room floor, allow us, the faithful, to see how far you were willing to push culture. It's safe--we've already signed the lease to live with you for the next year.

Despite the overwhelming sense that our current culture is drowned in overt sexuality, selfishness, and freedom from community and family accountability, we find in the main arena something beneath all the hype. A kind and often not so subtle nod to old-fashioned values. I may be speaking too soon, and perhaps it will all end with 10 kids 3 of whom are adopted from Switzerland, China and Afghanistan. But something tells me these two may just be real reality. A lesson in hard work and vision, and a complete unwavering to ones values and goals. Taking life's slings and arrows, and moving forward. Carving your own destiny.

It is a joke of mine when I sit down to dinner with a good friend that she label everything that came from her backyard. "Tonight we are having corn (from the garden), potato salad (with potatoes and herbs from the garden), a salad (with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, long beans, etc., etc., from the garden...)

Every summer my fridge is stocked with the freshest, most local, and organic produce one could dream of. It never ceases to amaze me that in the winter her yard looks like this...

And come summer we are blessed by the love and work of a master with this...

And I am able to take for granted this...

Meal after meal 'til summers end.

Please don't let it go too fast...

As I sit overlooking the city of Hartford, the capital of the state of my upbringing, brought here solely to work on a piece about Race, I am overwhelmed that my adopted state of New York has passed the marriage equality act.

I am so very proud that the district of my birth (D.C.), the state of my youth (CT), and the city of my adulthood (NY) agree that the we are all equal. Having been apart of relationships that at various times in our American history would have been considered illegal, I cannot help but sit in wonderment at our abilities as a society to fight the good fight.

Even when it feels that good and kind and non-judgmental will fade in the apparent might of division and ego, moments like this come to remind us that God (or the greater humanity) still exists.

Living enough to love as you please.
